The Weekly Feed: 4.3.12
The Weekly Feed’s Kyle Meredith shares his top five songs of the week including tracks from The Flaming Lips & Bon Iver, Japandroids, Florence + The Machine & Josh Homme, Dirty Projectors and Dum Dum Girls.
These days, when you hear that Flaming Lips are releasing something new, it’s a safe bet that it’ll be accompanied by news that said release will contain something absurd. We’ve got a gummy fetus and much more from Oklahoma’s native sons, so when we heard that their Record Store Day double LP, The Flaming Lips and Heavy Fwends, may contain drops of blood from a few of those fwends, well, yeah, that makes sense. Just who’s blood? Chris Martin, Nick Cave, Yoko Ono, Ke$ha, or maybe even Justin Vernon, featured here with Bon Iver. May want to drop that needle a bit more gently this time around.
You read that right. Ms. Machine is duetting with Mr. Stone Age on the ol’ Johnny n’ June classic. And what’s better, this is for the upcoming episode of MTV’s Unplugged starring Flo and her Gang. Don’t expect to hear the two get too country though. Welch’s soaring vocals are still firmly planted in that pop-gothic atmosphere that’s she’s created so well, and Homme is trying his best just to be in the same room, but oh what fun! This isn’t a pair I could have imagined, but it makes so much sense, and the fact that they’re using the forum, with all it’s history of landmark moments, to do something special is reason no. 7032 why we love these guys.
Oh wow, so this is a week for surprises, you say. Well then, thank you sir, may I have another? Dirty Projectors dropped the press release of a new album, Swing Lo Magellan, and quickly followed with a DL of this first tease. A quick heads up, when dude hits that title line, and the gals in the back rev up to the defining high note, you’ll need to take a sec to pick your jaw up off the floor.
When you name your album Celebration Rock, you best be ready to follow that up with some evidence. Japandroids exceed well beyond just that, giving us a fist pumping album and arguably the most fun singles of the year. This duo had one of my favorite records of 2010 and thank goodness they haven’t lost their touch. Like Andrew W.K. filtered through an Against Me song, you can expect this one to get replayed well into the summer.
The best track from Only in Dreams gets its moment in the spotlight as this week’s big winner. Dee Dee haunts us in black and white as the scene opens only to pull back and find out that a bunch of ravenous seamstress’s are out to get a piece of the garment destroying action. Ok, so that might not be what the treatment looked like on paper, but if I were her, I wouldn’t take it! Nice clothes are hard to come by. I mean, you have to find the right fit and right color, and this gang of scissor happy rejects are only here to rip you to shreds. It’s just not right.
