The Insiders: The Chemical Brothers

Tom fills us in on their epic new concert film.

The Chemical Brothers have never been your average musicians, so it should go without saying that when the band decides to release a concert movie, they’re going to make it as out-there as possible. The Chemical Brothers: Don’t Think was shot with 20 different cameras during the Fujirock Festival in Japan back in 2010 in front of 50,000 fans, transforming your basic movie night into an all-encompassing musical experience. Web Editor Liza Darwin got the lowdown from Tom about weird cults, new music, and why you’ve gotta go big or go home.

Hey Tom, how’s it going? I’m okay. Over the weekend I’ve dropped a speaker on my toe.. I was moving it and stupidly thought I could do it on my own. I’m a little hopped up on painkillers right now.

Oh, well that will make this interesting then! Exactly [laughing].

Why did you decide to do a concert film now? It’s one of those things that we’ve always wanted to do. Adam Smith directed the film and he’s been trying to get us to do one. It was one of those things where if you’re going to do it and make it a lasting documentary of what you’ve been doing for the last 15 years, then you have to go all out.

What is the main thing you want fans to get out of it? We didn’t want to replace a concert; it’s intended to be a separate experience. We had the idea that It was going to be a one-off show, it was just going to be one night captured.

You guys have toured pretty much everywhere. What’s the weirdest show you’ve experienced? Oh man, definitely San Diego. It was around a holiday back in 1995 and we were performing in some loft space. The people seemed a bit weird at first, but then as the night wore on we realized the entire thing had cultish undertones…like, chanting and evangelism and stuff. Luckily we were able to escape, but I do remember that lots of the people were in kilts. Weird.

The Chemical Brothers: Don’t Think hits theaters for one day only February 1. Find out more info here.
